Dear Olympia Camp parents and campers,
We hope this letter finds you happy, healthy, and optimistic as it seems our shared efforts to flatten the Covid-19 curve have begun to make a difference.
Case counts and hospitalizations across the province have declined with our collective efforts to isolate and maintain social distancing; to follow the guidance of our politicians and public health officials around mask-wearing; and, to take opportunities to get our first- and second- vaccinations as quickly as possible. These efforts seem to have made a difference, and we are all relieved- and excited- by the slow and careful return to a pre-pandemic sense of normalcy.
This return to normal for many children across the province has also meant a return to camp.
As members of the Ontario Camps Association, we supported our colleague’s efforts to work with doctors, public health officials, and the Ontario government for a careful and responsible reopening of day camps, overnight camps, and outdoor education programs. Their efforts to #planforcamp were successful, and approvals were granted only a few short weeks ago.
While many camps were able to immediately announce their reopening and a return to full operations in early July, for some camps the announcement came too late. Many of Ontario’s most successful camps decided to remain closed for 2021, while others pivoted their programs to a different type of experience. Olympia was one of the camps that made the difficult decision to restructure its program and operate as a “family camp” this summer.
We made the decision at the time out of an abundance of caution. The uncertainty about the situation, short runway provided by the late approval to reopen, and the inherent challenges of maintaining the health and safety of our campers and staff given our weekly programming model, all contributed to the decision to pivot.
But if Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s that things can change. And for us, they have!
With the successful camp operations of so many of our OCA colleagues, the continued success of the vaccination program, decreasing case counts, and the Province’s decision to move shortly to Stage 3 in its reopening plans– as well as the continued calls and emails from former campers and parents encouraging us to reopen– our directors and senior staff (including leaders of our health and wellness team) have decided to return to our traditional camp program for the month of August.
And we couldn’t be more excited!
In August we will be returning to our traditional Olympia Sports Camp model, offering Ontario’s youth a world-class, dynamic, upbeat, emotionally, and physically safe summer sports camp. We will be offering our typical 1-week camps including Basketball, Volleyball, Aqua sports, Soccer, and more, enhanced by a range of traditional camp activities and facilities such as the Challenge Course, High Ropes, Giant Swing, Zip Lines, and waterfront activities of canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming in our lake.
While details of our August programs are still to be finalized, parents and our camper athletes can expect to benefit from our full roster of experienced coaches to help mentor campers, ensuring that as we approach our 50th anniversary, the (abridged) summer of 2021 will continue to offer an unparalleled summer sports and camp experience.
As you would expect, to help ensure that we maintain necessary health and wellness standards, we will be limiting the number of campers in the program this year.
This limited enrollment and our condensed season will impact our ability to meet demand, and we would encourage those hoping to attend a session this August to register early, to avoid disappointment. Please visit our website at olympiasportscamp.com for more information about our August 2021 program and to register your son or daughter. Please allow us a day or two to update this website in terms of the camps that will be offered. . Of course, you should also feel free to contact us by phone at 705 635 2491 with any questions.
This has been a challenging year for all of us- particularly, for our children. With school closures, the suspension of so many teams and leagues, the lack of physical exercise and social engagement, we believe that this year, more than ever, a return to Olympia Sports Camp (even just for a few short weeks) is what so many of our kids need… and we couldn’t be happier to make that possible.
We can’t wait to see you in August.
